Single pane windows consist of a single piece of glass whereas double pane windows consist of two pieces of glass that are sealed and filled with gas for insulation. The gas in between the double pane windows is usually argon or a similar gas that acts as an insulator and can save as much as 25% on heating/cooling costs over single pane windows. Double pane windows are commonly referred to as sealed units or double glazed windows.
